Florida Republicans on Thursday passed legislation they called the “strongest” immigration enforcement bill in any state in the country, after a fight that amplified political tensions within the party as they aimed to help President Donald Trump.

The Republican-led legislature and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis agreed on a final product after a rare intra-party political battle brought out death threats.

The bills were a point of contention between DeSantis and Republican legislative leaders, but a compromise was reached. Democrats opposed the bills, arguing they are unconstitutional and politically motivated.
